Cooperation with Green Cross International
World Waternet and the environmental organization Green Cross International can reinforce each other. On October 21 both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under the watchful eye of Michael Gorbachev (founding president of Green Cross) and Job Cohen (Mayor of Amsterdam).
Water is the bearer of life, directly related to climate, thirst, hunger, poverty, health and economic and social development. It is the bearer of all the Millennium Development Goals, but also a source of conflict.
Water and Peace
Water will become increasingly important in maintaining peace. The national and international dialogue on water between politicians and citizens should therefore be promoted.
Working on the improvement of water supply and water management also means managing conflicts. In The Netherlands, the pollution of the rivers Rhine and Maas threatened to become a conflict. But through dialogue (the creation of RIWA) and cooperation with other countries, a solution was reached.
These situations also occur in countries where World Waternet is active. Egypt is one example. This country depends almost exclusively on water from the River Nile and thus also on neighbouring Sudan. Cooperation and strengthening of water bodies in these countries is therefore of great importance. Here the objectives of Green Cross International and World Waternet come together and on this subject they can reinforce each other's goals.
